As the first engineering firm approved statewide by the California Energy Commission to provide engineering, building official, plan review, and inspection services for new power plant construction — including eleven of the West's largest and cleanest natural gas power plants — BJY has consistently led the industry in technical innovation and regulatory expertise.

FIRM HISTORY
Bernard Johnson Young Engineering founded in Houston, Texas — delivering largest-scale architecture, engineering, and planning services to federal and private sector clients across the United States.
Expanded to federal laboratory and military facility design. Developed the world's top software expert system (then called 'AI') for autorouting of printed circuit boards and hybrid circuits. Delivered a major telecom carrier AI voice recognition product. In a Young-BJY joint venture, he wrote in assembler the PATHFINDER AI autorouter, at the time called AI but in retrospect an "expert system" — up to 16 layers and 400 chips that ran on IBM PCs — a resounding success. Became world's first IBM PC authorized reseller and provided Michael Dell at UT Austin with credit and IBM PCs. Later, he designed the world's first 80486 lightweight Notebook computer two years before Dell offered a 80486 notebook or laptop; his was tooled for 100,000 production runs by Sharp in Japan.
First CEC-approved engineering firm statewide for California power plants. Major project deliveries continue and expand on 4 continents, with sixteen execution offices and registrations as PE, SE, RA, and RLA in 44 states.
National expansion — 200+ state and municipal jurisdictions. Chief Building Official services established in Austin, TX, Buckeye, AZ, Cedar Park, TX, and beyond.
Launched digital engineering and BIM integration practice. Zigi™ Smart Home and LifeSafety™ platforms developed.
